If you are operating your small quilting business in your home, you will want to consider purchasing business insurance. Whether you rent or own your home, you may have renter’s or homeowner’s insurance that protects you against the loss of use of the home. It also covers you if there is an accident on the property and a guest is hurt. These insurance policies may not be sufficient to cover the business as well. For example, you may be leasing equipment for your small quilting business that becomes damaged. Your homeowner’s insurance policy will not necessarily pay to repair or replace this equipment because it was being used to run a business.
The other consideration is if you were required to move out of your home. The homeowner’s insurance policy will cover the repairs to the house. While it is being rebuilt or repaired, you will not be able to operate your business, and you will lose the income that you are currently earning. Your homeowner’s insurance policy would not replace this income, but a business insurance policy will.
Lastly, you must consider your car insurance policy. If you are using your vehicle to operate your small quilting business, your auto insurance policy may not cover the damages because it is a personal auto insurance policy. If you need to use your vehicle to make deliveries, for example, you will want to purchase a commercial auto insurance policy to ensure that your business interests are covered if there is ever an accident involving your vehicle.
The small business you are running may be in a small shop, but it may also be run inside your home. You can purchase a small business insurance policy that can be tailored just to fit your needs if it is run inside a store, or you can purchase home-based business insurance that covers the risks of running a home business.

When I think of quilting, I think of my grandmother, even though I’m not sure that she ever made a quilt… She was into sewing though, and sometime around my Junior year in high school, she gave me her 60′s era Sears Kenmore sewing machine. Pale green in color and made of solid metal through and through, it attached to and folded neatly into a beautiful dark wood table with a drawer. It came with a matching chair with a hidden space saving compartment under the seat cushion that my grandmother had stored Read the rest of this entry »

Even if not everyone in the family can help with the sewing, the piecemeal nature of quilting allows plenty of room for all ages to be able to participate. Very young children can, with supervision, decorate a piece with fabric paint or crayons, or perhaps even contribute a printed design to be cut from an outgrown garment featuring a beloved character. Older children can come up with designs by marking around cookie cutters to cut and hand-sew shapes onto fabric or add more sophisticated embellishments like beads or sequins.Want more?
